Our Board of Directors is responsible for the strategic direction of the organisation, including financial and legal matters and annual performance management against agreed targets.
Sir Tim Wilson was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire and a member of several Higher Education and CBI Policy Boards during his executive career. He is acknowledged as being one of the leading thinkers in university/business collaboration and is a strong advocate of the centrality of universities in economic and societal development. He was commissioned by the Government to undertake a Review of UK University - Industry Collaboration, a Review which was published in 2012; many of its recommendations have been implemented.
He was conferred with a Knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list 2011, for Services to Higher Education and to Business. He holds honorary degrees from Hertfordshire, Plymouth and London South Bank Universities and is a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Hertfordshire. He is currently a non-executive director of The Unite Group plc and a trustee of Garden House Hospice Care. He joined the Board of Arden University as Chair in September 2016.
Aaron Etingen is the CEO of Global University Systems. He leads a team of over 1500 employees, ensuring that innovation, creativity and a strong commitment to high standards are embedded across the entire group. With a background in the finance and banking sectors and strong management credentials, he led GUS to go from a small business school with 4 students to a global organisation with more than 40,000 students and alumni from 180 countries and growing presence worldwide. His leadership is one of the key reasons behind the success of Global University Systems.
Dr Philip Hallam joined Arden University (then Resource Development International - RDI) in 2002 as UK Managing Director. In 2007 he became Group CEO and under his leadership the organisation was re-engineered to achieve growth, Taught Degree-Awarding Powers (TDAP) in 2014 and University Title in 2015. RDI became Arden University in August 2015 and Dr Hallam as Vice-Chancellor led the launch of the first new distance learning university for more than 50 years. He continues to lead the University as it launches its own innovative portfolio of flexible programmes, and builds on its substantial expertise in online distance learning to launch new blended learning study centres.
Before joining RDI, Dr Hallam spent more than 15 years as a senior manager and academic within the UK university sector. From 1998 to 2002, he was Head of School of Engineering Systems at University of Central England (now Birmingham City University) where he was appointed Professor at the age of 33. Prior to this, and with a passion for innovative technology based learning, he undertook academic, research and management duties at the University of Northumbria, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Huddersfield. Dr Hallam holds a PhD, a BSc (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering and remains a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
With a BA (Hons) Political Science, Ethics, Law and Economics from the University of Toronto, an MSc International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a Graduate Diploma in Law from the College of Law of England and Wales, Valery is now Group Managing Director of GUS. He works closely with Aaron Etingen, GUS's Founder and Executive Chairman, to develop LSBF’s creative, driven and energetic character.
Alfred Morris qualified as a Chartered Accountant but then switched to an academic career at Sussex University as a Senior Leverhulme Research Fellow leading a team which undertook international comparative research into University Planning Management and Organisation. He gained a Masters degree at the University of Lancaster Management School and served as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Warwick Business School.
He was appointed advisor to the UK House of Commons Select Committee on Education, Science and the Arts to assist a major inquiry into the future of higher education. He then returned to his original career - becoming Group Management Accountant of the Arthur Guiness Group - before becoming a Senior Management Consultant with Deloitte Haskins and Sells.
He returned to higher education in his late thirties and became Director (CEO) of the Polytechnic of the South Bank, before appointment as Director of Bristol Polytechnic. He became the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of England, in Bristol.
He has served on: the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (Chair, Quality Assurance and Audit Committees); the Further Education Funding Council for England; the Higher Education Quality Council; and, the Council for National Academic Awards.
He is a former Associate of Smith and Williamson and holds or has held several non executive directorships, including Bristol and West (Bank of Ireland UK). His consultancy and related assignments have included appointments as interim ‘turn around’ Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales Lampeter and of London Metropolitan University. He is Honorary President of Hartpury College and recently became Chair of University Canada West (a ‘for profit’ university in British Columbia).
Alfred Morris holds several honorary degrees and fellowships and received a CBE for services to higher education. He serves as one of Her Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenants for the County of Gloucestershire and is a former High Sheriff of that County. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (former Council Member) and of the Royal Statistical Society.
