Apprenticeship Degrees

The Digital Technology Solutions (DTS) programmes can be studied with Arden as Distance Learning, Blended Learning or as an integrated apprenticeship. Anyone studying an apprenticeship benefits from government funding and can graduate without paying for their own degree, but these programmes are often more involved than the degree equivalents.

For the DTS apprenticeships, you will study the BSc Digital Technology Solutions degree with your chosen pathway - IT Consultant, Software Engineer or Data Analyst - which tailors some of the modules studied over the 3-year course. In addition to this, apprentices will benefit from one-to-one coaching from an industry expert to help them get the most out of the course. They will ensure that apprentices don’t just focus on the knowledge acquisition which often makes up a university degree, but will also focus on the learning of key skills and behaviours which all DTS apprenticeship graduates should possess to be the best they can be in the workplace. Find out more here.

In a standard degree programme the last hurdle to completion is the final-year project, a significant piece of self-directed work where you choose the topic and produces a dissertation amounting to several thousand words, or a subject-specific artefact.

For degree apprenticeships you have to complete a project to pass the degree course elements, but must also take part in an End-Point Assessment (EPA) to evidence your attainment of the core knowledge, skills and behaviours. For many apprenticeships this involves an interview with a professional body, however as this DTS is an integrated degree, Arden will undertake the EPA with every learner. There are two parts to the DTS EPA: the project and the presentation.

The Project

This is the final-year project that degree students undertake, but for the DTS apprenticeship this must be focused on a specific organisational challenge. You will have the support of an experienced Arden dissertation supervisor who will work with you (the apprentice), the hosting organisation and the coach to identify a suitable project focus and manage the progress of this over the 6-month period. This work will combine elements from all of the modules studied over the degree programme and will result in an artefact that is of value to the host organisation. The project is assessed by the employer, academics and external examiners from Arden.

These projects will differ by pathway, for instance:

Software Engineer - This could be a project to design and develop a significant piece of software or a new software product prototype to achieve defined business objectives, for a defined user group or customer group, to meet the business need and applying appropriate levels of security. It will include significant project planning including estimations of both time and cost to proposed solutions, include technical and commercial aspects of the proposed solution.

IT Consultant - This could be a project to undertake an IT consultancy project to formulate and evaluate technical alternatives to meet businesses requirements. This will likely include issues of integration with existing technology and procedures, maintenance and expansion and the consideration of both proprietary and open source solutions as appropriate. It will include significant project planning including estimations of both time and cost to proposed solutions, include technical and commercial aspects of the proposed solution.

Data Analyst - This could be a project to analyse, devise and deploy data analytics solutions for a real-world problem domain. In particular, applying data analysis techniques, processes and tools to perform analytics for a significant data-driven business scenario. It will include significant project planning including estimations of both time and cost to proposed solutions, include technical and commercial aspects of the proposed solution.

The Presentation

This viva examination will last between 30 minutes and one hour, where you (the apprentice) will present information about your  project, answer any questions from the panel and show you have attained the key knowledge, skills and behaviours essential for a DTS graduate.

You will be informed of the areas the panel want to focus on at least one week in advance and may need to bring evidence from your e-portfolio that has been building up over the entirety of the programme to evidence specific behaviours or skills which aren’t evident in the project write-up or artefact. The panel will consist of Arden academics who have taught you, a Quality Co-ordinator, the coach and a representative from your employer. After successfully completing the presentation you can graduate from your DTS apprenticeship.

More pathway-specific information about the DTS EPA can be found here.

If you have any further questions about the EPA please contact the Programme Team Leader for Apprenticeships, Tim Robson via email here: trobson@arden.ac.uk
