### Monday 18th September 2023 – Diversity in Higher Education

The traits and characteristics that make each person unique are known as diversity elements. These aspects of diversity contribute to the complexity and richness of the human experience, influencing our thoughts, actions, and relationships with others.

Recognising and appreciating diversity is crucial for creating fair and inclusive environments, promoting respect, empathy, tolerance, understanding, and learning.

**Session Title:** Barrister at No5 Chambers with Nabila Malik

**Webinar overview:** With almost 25 years of experience, Nabila Malik, a Barrister from a state school background, overcame challenges to forge a successful career, becoming the only Muslim female pupil Barrister at the Chancery Bar in her training year. Nabila won 'Barrister of the Year' in 2020 while mentoring disadvantaged pupils and advocating for women in law.

**Synopsis:** Despite facing objections from her school and a lack of role models, Angela, born to working-class immigrant parents in Birmingham, pursued her dream of becoming a journalist and is now an internationally acclaimed television producer. Angela shares her journey and inspires others to surpass limitations and fulfil their potential.

By offering such personalised support, we can empower every student to realise their full potential and succeed in their academic pursuits.

He spent seven months in Salisbury Spinal Unit for rehabilitation, before returning to study and earning a university degree. To truly promote inclusivity, it is important to act rather than just talk about it. You can start by joining a student organisation or attending events that prioritise acceptance and tolerance for all participants. It is crucial to speak up if you witness any discriminatory behaviour or language. Additionally, it is important to be open to learning and growing as an individual.
