Arden University has launched a BSc (Hons) Psychology; this is the first time the University has offered degrees in psychology.
Arden’s psychology degree has been developed with a holistic approach, covering both the statistical and the practical sides of the subject. The course design enables graduates to continue their studies as a ‘research orientated’ psychologist or an ‘applied psychologist (one who uses their knowledge to practically help patients).
Chartered psychologists are in high demand; as of July 2016 there were over 19,000 chartered psychologists in the UK. Every year over 5,000 UK students gain psychology doctorates or post graduate qualifications.
The number of psychologists in the UK has tripled in the last few years to keep up with a demand in those seeking behavioural, educational or mental health help.
There are significant financial rewards for pursuing a career in psychology. An NHS trainee psychologist will start on around £26,000 and over a lifetime could work up to £57,000 as a principal psychologist or almost £100k as a consultant. The average non-graduate salary in the UK is £22,100.*
Research from Prospects** found that psychology graduates were one of the most likely groups to be employed after leaving university – only 6.2% of psychology graduates were out of work a year after graduating, compared to 9.7% of media studies students.
Dr Philip Hallam, Vice Chancellor and CEO of Arden, said: “At Arden we are dedicated to developing and offering practical courses that equip our graduates to gain the careers they want. We have created an academic programme that offers students the opportunities to use their psychology knowledge both theoretically and practically.
“Distance, or online learning, is gaining in popularity and enables people to develop themselves to change or enhance their career. Attending university doesn’t have to be sacrificed for other commitments such as family, work or caring responsibilities. At Arden we have worked hard to develop a truly flexible approach to online learning, whilst providing our students with top quality staff and resources. We believe study should be an investment in the future and we believe that’s what every education opportunity should offer.”
Arden BSc (Hons) Psychology has been launched as part of a suite of new psychology degrees, which also includes joint BA (Hons) in Psychology & Criminology, Psychology & Social Science, Psychology & Law and Psychology & HRM.
The courses will be offered from August, with the first intake in October this year. All the degrees will be offered 100% online. Students will participate in tutorials and study online at times that suit them, with regular contact with their peers and lecturers.
