Developed in line with the growing needs of today’s health and care sector, this apprenticeship instils the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and attitudes needed to successfully implement positive change and improve outcomes. Covering topics including personal and professional development, systems, change, and strategic management, and supporting resilience in yourself and others, you’ll graduate with a skillset and mindset that reflects the sector’s current and future needs. 

You’ll learn how to drive progress in your team(s), inspire your organisation/system to build compassionate, inclusive, person-centred cultures of care, and bring immediate positive and productive changes to your team(s), organisations, services, and service users.

How do we assess you?

Assessments

You’ll be assessed on:

  • Ongoing workplace application of your knowledge, skills, and behaviours throughout the apprenticeship programme, and creation of an evidence portfolio.
  • Mandatory attendance at all three developmental workshops and the five facilitated impact groups.
  • Completion of all online content on the virtual campus.
  • Regular contributions to online discussion forums and facilitator provocations.
  • Submission of module assignments including reflective essays, presentations, or evaluation reports.
  • Submission of a 5,000-word reflective essay at the end of the programme demonstrating how you have developed and applied your leadership throughout the programme.
  • End Point Assessment (EPA). The EPA is conducted by an external assessment organisation and will be graded as either a pass, merit, or distinction. The End Point Assessment (EPA) organisation for your programme is the Chartered Management Institute. The EPA consists of 2 assessment methods: 1. A 4000-word Strategic Business Proposal, followed by a 20-minute presentation and 40-minute question and answer session with an independent assessor, to further explore the Strategic Business Proposal (50%) 2. A 60-minute Professional Discussion, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence (50%).

Senior Leaders Degree Apprenticeship

You will access your modules through the virtual classroom and complete all the module lessons. Throughout each study block you will attend your scheduled teaching and learning sessions during working hours, attend your 1-2-1 coaching sessions and undertake your workplace assignment and coach led activities. Your coach will guide you to ensure you are effectively applying and evidencing your new knowledge, whilst developing and demonstrating the skills and behaviours considered essential for success in your role.

Delivery Mode

Our blended delivery model consists of:

  • Seven self-guided online modules
  • Two days of back-to-back virtual workshops at the start of Module 3 - Taking Stock
  • A one-day virtual workshop at the end of the programme
  • Five facilitated, virtual impact groups 
  • Regular 1-2-1 virtual Coaching 
  • Quarterly virtual progress reviews

Entry requirements

At Arden University we consider applications on a case by case basis. If you have significant work experience or have qualifications you have gained elsewhere - we are more than happy to discuss your application.

What you need to study with us

Our aim is to make learning as accessible as possible by ensuring that you can study in a flexible and convenient way. That's why we keep our requirements simple. All you need is a laptop or desktop PC (we recommend one running the latest version of Windows), and a good internet connection. Through ilearn, our online university campus in the cloud, you'll be able to access your course calendar, support services, learning materials, and our online library containing thousands of ebooks, as well as tools for creating assignments, keeping notes, and collaborating with other students on your course.

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be in employment in a job within health and care with responsibilities aligned with the apprenticeship standard. 
  • By completion of Arden University’s skills scan, you must demonstrate this programme provides significant new learning.
  • Complete Arden University’s Maths and English initial assessments.
  • Have evidence of funding eligibility and commitment for the required off-the-job hours from your employer.
  • Have proficiency in the English language. If no prior learning has been taught in English, IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element); or TOEFL iBT 90 or equivalent.
  • Be a UK/EEA resident for at least three years prior to starting the apprenticeship.

Meet the faculty

Dr Stephanie West

Stephanie West joined Arden University in November 2020 as Head of the School of Health and Care Management. In addition to her wealth of healthcare industry experience, Stephanie has held a number of Senior Academic and Leadership positions in Health, Social Care and Applied Science faculties at a variety of universities across the UK. Stephanie will provide leadership to the School of Healthcare Management, ensuring that it delivers high quality academic provision and student satisfaction across all courses.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI) 

This course awards a CMI Level 7 Award in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice as well as Chartered Manager status.

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) promotes excellence in UK management and leadership. The institute aims to boost career development across the management sector and connect you with like-minded professionals across diverse sectors.

As the CMI possesses a Royal Charter, they are the only organisation in the UK that can award Chartered Manager status to their members – the gold standard in management. They are also active in business policy making across the globe and ensure that their more than 140,000 members are represented in policy decision making. 

As an Arden student, you’ll have free CMI Membership throughout your studies, giving you access to a range of additional resources including a mentoring service and invitations to networking events both online and offline.

NHS Leadership Academy

The NHS Leadership Academy sits proudly within the NHS People Directorate, NHS England. The Academy aims to help everyone in the NHS discover their full leadership potential and achieve the highest standards in health and care. Institute of Health & Social Care Management (IHSCM)

This course is endorsed by the Institute of Health & Social Care Management (IHSCM), whose aim is to create a supportive professional body that is relevant in its activities and modern in its approach, and holds sector leaders in the NHS, social care, third sector, and private healthcare amongst its members.
