Apprenticeships in England are work-based vocational development programmes designed to upskill or reskill employees at every level within UK business and service. They form a key part of many businesses’ workforce strategy, helping them provide an opportunity to develop their people and drive productivity and engagement.
Although apprenticeships have traditionally provided structured routes into skilled work for young people entering the workplace, changes in government policy now mean apprenticeships are a structured route for the whole workforce to learn while they earn and to empower staff to unleash their potential.
This means that apprenticeship courses provide access to professional career pathways for young people entering the workplace, those mid-career, and career switchers. No matter who you are or where you are currently in your career, apprenticeships can facilitate continuous career progression. Getting a degree and other professional qualifications while working is fantastic for social mobility and breaking the glass ceiling.

What are the benefits of a degree apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are highly structured programmes with significant built-in employer and university support, providing workplace experience and exposure to learn new knowledge, skills and behaviours.
The knowledge, skills, behaviours and experience you will gain as a degree apprentice will help you demonstrate your expertise and workplace impact to current and future employers, future-proofing your career and giving you choice and bargaining power.
That’s right. You will earn a salary while gaining invaluable experience and expert knowledge that sets you up for future career success. Instead of a large student loan to pay off, you will have a strong professional skill set and knowledge base, and more money in your pocket.
You will gain your degree alongside industry-recognised qualifications, which will validate your skills and knowledge and demonstrate your value to future employers. You will hold these qualifications throughout your career, improving your future job prospects.
You will achieve a valuable globally recognised qualification whilst working and receiving free training. That means by the time the average university student has graduated, you will have already earned approximately £100,000 and have no debt. Apprentices also earn more than graduates**
High earning potential.
Government data shows strong earnings potential for degree-level apprentices, alongside sustained employment of over 94% of participants*.
