Packing for a move to a new country can feel daunting. This checklist isn’t exhaustive, but it covers the key essentials to help you feel prepared when you arrive in the UK.
Important documents
Make sure you pack all required documents and keep them with you in your hand luggage. This should include:
- Your passport and eVisa
- Accommodation contract or address details
- Financial documents
- Vaccination records and prescriptions
- Any paperwork relating to your student immigration status
We recommend keeping these together in a secure folder so they’re easy to access when travelling.
Preparing for the UK climate
The UK weather may be different from what you’re used to. It can be cool, wet, and changeable, so it’s best to be prepared.
- Bring warm and waterproof Layers
- Pack waterproof shoes
- Layering is key, and it’s also worth being prepared for occasional summer heatwaves
Plug adaptors
UK plug sockets are type G and may differ from those in your home country.
- Bring at least one suitable adaptor so you can use your electronic devices on arrival
- Additional adaptors are widely available to buy in the UK if needed
Laptop or tablet
You will need a laptop or tablet to access your study materials, learning resources, and online tools. Make sure you bring a device you can rely on before your studies begin.
Medication and prescriptions
If you take prescribed medication, bring enough to last for the required period. You may also want to bring a copy of your prescription or a doctor’s letter, if available.
Personal belongings
Bringing a few personal items, such as photos or small mementoes, can help you feel more at home while settling into life in the UK.
Cash
Bring a small amount of cash for immediate or emergency needs, but avoid carrying large sums. An amount of £100 to £200 is usually sufficient.
What you don’t need to bring
Second-hand shops are common across the UK and offer clothing and household items at affordable prices. Bedding, storage items, and other essentials can also be bought easily from supermarkets or online, so there is no need to bring these with you.
