Gemma, what inspired you to return to education after leaving your nursing career?

I was a senior nurse managing a ward, and I’d worked incredibly hard to get to that point. When my career came to an unexpected halt, I struggled. I felt like I’d lost my sense of purpose outside of being a mom, and that was a tough adjustment. Education became a way for me to rebuild myself and find a new direction.

You mentioned it took time to apply. What were some of the doubts you had at first?

It did take me about a week to press the apply button! I was overthinking everything—what if I couldn’t go back to work afterward? What if I wasted three years or took a spot from someone else? Worst of all, I thought I’d probably fail, so what was the point? Those thoughts almost stopped me, but I eventually decided to take the leap, and I’m so glad I did.

How has your experience at Arden University changed your outlook?

It’s been transformative. I went from doubting whether I could even finish a module to now being on track for a first-class degree. Along the way, I’ve taken on volunteer roles and become the “mom” of my study groups, to whom students often come to me for advice. That’s been a huge confidence boost. It’s also reminded me that I have valuable skills, and my brain is still sharp. Arden has given me back my confidence and drive, or as I like to say, my “mojo.”

How have you managed to juggle studying with family life and other commitments?

It’s definitely a balancing act, but Arden’s flexibility has made it possible. Being able to study at my own pace and fit learning around family life has been essential. My kids have even been a source of inspiration. They’ve seen me working hard and cheering me on, which has been really special.

What advice would you give to someone who’s hesitant about taking the leap into higher education?

Just go for it. If you’re doubting yourself like I was, know that you’re probably underestimating what you’re capable of. I thought I’d fail, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. There’s so much support out there, especially at Arden. You’ll never know what you can achieve unless you try. Take that leap—you won’t regret it.

Gemma’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief. At Arden University, we’re proud to support students like Gemma, helping them rediscover their potential and achieve the success they deserve.
