About Christiana
Cristiana Salgueiro is a Portugal born designer currently based in Lincolnshire, UK, whose work explores the intersection of design, ethics, and emerging technology. Her practice focuses on using design as a way to question systems and spark conversation, as seen in her project "PAUSE", a speculative wearable that challenges how AI interacts with personal privacy.
Project Overview
“PAUSE” is a speculative design project that explores the future of AI and user privacy through a wearable device that alerts people when voice recordings are happening nearby. Shaped like a musical pause symbol (semibreve rest), the device notifies users when AI microphones are active and lets them block their voice with white noise. It empowers people to take back control over their privacy, especially in creative or sensitive conversations.
What started as a conceptual exploration took on a life of its own. The project grew beyond a prototype into a full ecosystem: a dedicated website where the product can be discovered and purchased, a visual manifesto explaining the message behind the symbol, an sustainable return programme for used devices, an app that allows users to adjust their settings, and even a sculptural charging stand, designed not just for functionality but as a decorative piece for the home.
The wearable was intentionally created as something the user chooses to wear, a conscious statement, not just a tool. It carries a powerful visual message about digital autonomy and responsibility. It stands as a silent protest against the absence of regulation in how AI captures and processes private data in both public and private settings.
The biggest challenge was balancing speculative thinking with human-centred relevance. I wanted the outcome to be provocative but still grounded. Coming from a commercial design background, where I was used to creating for the here and now, shifting into speculative design brought discomfort and uncertainty.
"PAUSE" received a final grade of 82%, but more importantly, it marked a defining moment in how I understand design, not only as a way to solve problems, but as a tool to ask better questions and advocate for change.

Inspiration & Aspirations
What Inspires You?
I’m inspired by the intersection of design and ethics, where innovation meets responsibility, and inclusivity is at the core. Designers like Dunne and Raby have influenced my thinking, showing that speculative design isn't about providing final answers, but about raising important questions and provoking thought.
But honestly, my greatest inspiration comes from real people in real contexts. I’ve always been fascinated by nonverbal communication, how body language often tells a deeper truth than words. I observe closely, ask why, and challenge myself to step into someone else’s shoes to understand the small, overlooked details that can be transformed through thoughtful design.
What’s Next?
While I can’t predict exactly what comes next, I approach my future through the lens of the Cone of Possibilities, aware of the many potential paths ahead but committed to actively shaping my preferred future.
After reflecting on my career, skills, and my performance, both academically and professionally, I see myself moving toward speculative design, with a special focus on inclusivity. I’m drawn to spaces where creativity can be explored at the highest level and aligned with ethics and social impact.
My dream is to contribute to initiatives where design isn’t just a tool to solve immediate problems, but a discipline for asking better questions, challenging assumptions, and creating profound change.
Why Arden?
Studying at Arden gave me both the space and the courage to explore design with a deeper sense of purpose. I not only honed my technical and conceptual skills but also gained confidence in my voice as a designer and creative thinker.
The support, flexibility, and open conversations with tutors and peers were essential in helping me find my own path. Arden has been a pivotal part of my professional development, it offered me the opportunity I had long sought to grow, reflect, and recognise my true value.
Words of Wisdom
Your Advice to Future Design & Creativity Students
Follow your curiosity, not just trends. The creative path isn’t linear, and that’s a gift, it allows you to think critically, change your mind, and take unexpected turns.
You don’t need to follow models, frameworks or analysis by the book. Mix them, reorder them, reshape them. Be bold enough to experiment and give yourself permission to fail, because that’s how you grow stronger.
Most importantly, don’t create for approval. Create to start conversations, to provoke thought, to spark change. Make something that has a real impact in the real world.
And never forget: your background and your lived experiences are not limitations; they are your greatest assets. They make you unique, and that uniqueness is exactly what will allow you to contribute in ways no one else can.
