Student Representatives receive Mental Heath first aid training

Members of Arden University’s Student Representative Network have recently attended a two-day Mental Health First Aid training course.

The online course was designed to provide Arden’s Distance Learning Student Representatives with a better understanding of what mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions, and what the role of a First Aider for mental health should be.

Student Representatives were also taught how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition, how to recognise and manage stress, how to action the first aid plan, and how to better understand a range of mental health disorders and the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers.

Participating students have received a Level 3 qualification in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health. Further training sessions for our Blended Learning Students Reps will take place at our Coventry Head Office.

“Students at Arden University not only share feedback with their Student Representatives, they also reach out for support. Looking after the mental health of all our students is a top priority, and that’s why Arden University Students’ Association has provided this level 3 qualification to our Student Representatives, so they have the knowledge to fully support and signpost our students” said Jo Titley, Students’ Association Manager.

The move to provide student representative's with formal training is a continuation of Arden's commitment to Mental Health training. Last year, in cooperation with MIND and MHFA England, Arden made the commitment that every single colleague within Arden University will be offered the opportunity to either: become a Mental Health First Aider or Mental Health Champion; go through Mental Health Awareness for Managers training; or Undertake Mental Health Awareness training. Additionally, all members of Arden’s Executive Team committed to becoming Mental Health First Aiders.
