Online Learning: Is My English Good Enough?

Is My English Good Enough for University Study?

Here, at Arden University, all of our online learning courses are taught in English.

We want to make higher education as accessible as possible to everyone - wherever you are in the world. So, you don't need to hold any formal English qualifications. However, you will need to have reasonable proficiency in both written and spoken English.

By having a good level of English language proficiency, you'll be in the best place to make the most of your study materials and ultimately excel on your online course.

Most of the courses we offer have a minimum English proficiency requirement of:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.0 (with a score of no less than 5.5 in any element)

TOEFL logo

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-Based Test (iBT) - 80.

How Do I Demonstrate My English Language Skills?

You'll demonstrate your English language skills when you apply for your course.

We consider all applications on a case-by-case basis. So, while there aren't any set ways you could demonstrate your skills, you'd typically show them in the form of...

Supporting documentation, such as:

certificate

Qualifications (if you do have them)

work experience

Work experience

communication

Evidence you've previously studied in an environment where English was the medium of instruction.

You'll be able to find out more about the English proficiency requirements for your chosen course on the individual course page.

Don't worry - it certainly doesn't mean you can't apply. Instead, you can take our internal English Language Test.

It's designed to provide an opportunity for prospective non-native English-speaking students, who can't provide evidence of their proficiency, to enrol on their chosen course.

How Does Arden's English Language Test Work?

First, you need to have applied for a course here, at Arden. Secondly, your application needs to have been confirmed as being compatible by the student recruitment team.

It's an internet-based test (so, you'll need access to an internet-connected computer, tablet or smartphone). It uses the same grading system as IELTS. And it costs £48 to sit.

When you've completed the test, your results will be processed within 48 hours - and we'll let you know whether you've been successful. If you have been successful, you'll be able to request a grading certificate you can use as future evidence of English proficiency.
