We recently sat down with Janet, an MSc Project Management student studying at our Manchester campus, to chat about her journey so far. Originally from Nigeria, Janet relocated to the UK to pursue her dream of master’s study. In this feature, she shares her honest experiences of adapting to a new country, and the skills she’s building for her future career.
My name is Janet Olamide Adeosun, and I'm originally from Osun State in Nigeria. Moving to the UK to study a master's degree was something I'd dreamed about for years, and now I'm studying MSc Project Management at Arden University's Manchester campus. It hasn't always been easy, but it's already been an incredible experience. From meeting people from around the world to building new skills for my future career, every step has helped me grow in confidence and brought me closer to my goals.
Taking a long-held dream and making it a reality
Studying in the UK wasn't a last-minute decision for me. It was something I'd wanted to do for a long time.
I completed my undergraduate degree in Educational Management and spent time working in sales. As I thought more about my future, I realised I wanted to build a career that combined management, business, and project delivery. That's what led me to project management.
My long-term goal is to return to Nigeria and establish my own project management consultancy. I want to use the knowledge and experience I gain here to help businesses and organisations back home.
Getting to the UK took a lot of preparation. My family and I had been saving towards my education for several years before I applied. When the opportunity finally came, I was ready to take it.
Why I chose Arden University
I first heard about Arden University through the education consultant who helped me with my application and visa process.
When I looked at the MSc Project Management course, I felt it matched my career ambitions perfectly. The modules were relevant to the skills I wanted to develop, and I could see how they would help me build a strong foundation for the future.
Another factor that stood out to me was the course accreditation from the Association of Project Managers. Knowing the programme is recognised by professional bodies gave me confidence that I was making the right choice.
Settling into life in Manchester
Before moving to the UK, my main knowledge of Manchester came from football.
Like many people around the world, I'd heard of Manchester City and Manchester United. My favourite footballer is Erling Haaland, so Manchester already felt familiar in a way.
What surprised me most after arriving was how friendly everyone was.
I've met people from all over the world. My classmate is from Slovakia, my roommate is from Zimbabwe, and there are students from many other countries studying alongside me. Back home, I probably wouldn't have had the chance to meet such a diverse range of people every day.
Living in Manchester has helped me build a new community and broaden my perspective.
The only thing I'm still adjusting to is the weather. One minute it's sunny, the next it's raining, and then suddenly it's cold. That's definitely taken some getting used to!
A supportive learning environment
One of the things I love most about Arden's Manchester campus is the environment.
My classes don't always start until later in the day, but I often arrive early so I can study, complete coursework, or do some reading before lectures begin.
The campus is a great place to learn. There are dedicated study spaces, and the student support team is always approachable. If I have a question or need help with something, I know I can speak to someone who will point me in the right direction.
The city-centre location is another huge advantage. Everything is easily accessible, which makes student life much easier.
Building confidence through independent learning
The MSc Project Management course has challenged me in new ways.
A lot of the learning involves independent research, which was an adjustment at first. However, I've come to enjoy it because it's helping me develop skills that will be valuable throughout my career.
The lecturers have been incredibly supportive. Whenever there's something I don't understand, they're happy to explain it, recommend resources, or provide additional reading materials.
The course is also helping me improve my presentation, communication, and research skills, which are all essential for project management.
I'm learning far more than just theory. I'm learning how to think independently and solve problems for myself.
Making the most of support services
As an international student, there were naturally things I found confusing when I first arrived.
One example was learning how to access all the resources available to me. I booked an appointment with the Careers and Employability team, and they were extremely helpful.
They showed me how to access learning materials, find academic resources, improve my research skills, and make the most of the university's support systems.
I've also attended workshops focused on finding part-time work, which have been very useful as I settle into life in the UK.
Looking ahead
I know this degree won't be the end of my learning journey.
My plan is to continue developing my skills and eventually work towards professional qualifications such as PRINCE2. For me, this master's degree is an important foundation that will help me become more employable and prepare me for future opportunities.
Most importantly, it's helping me move closer to my dream of running my own project management consultancy one day.
My advice for other international students
If you're thinking about moving abroad to study, my advice is simple - take the leap!
It's normal to feel nervous, but you won't be alone.
I've learned that people are willing to help if you ask. Whether it's university staff, lecturers, classmates, or other students, there is always someone ready to support you. Don't be afraid to reach out, ask questions, and build connections.
Moving to another country can feel overwhelming at first, but it's also one of the best decisions you can make for your personal and professional growth.
For me, moving to Manchester and studying at Arden University has been a rewarding experience, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next.
