UPEACE and Arden University: International Conference 15th November 2023

Online International Conference

We are pleased to invite submissions to the 1st UPEACE and Arden University International conference. This online conference will bring together scholars and practitioners from the International University for Peace – Rome and Arden University in an exciting collaboration that reflects Arden’s growing international reputation as a provider of opportunities to students from diverse and non-traditional backgrounds. This is echoed in the conference's aim to explore the role of equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Conference theme: Enacting UN sustainable development goals: Exploring the role of equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights in theory and practice

The UN Sustainable Development Goals represent a global effort to improve the lives of people across the world. Since 2015, many initiatives have sought to progress towards achieving these goals, although the UN acknowledges this needs to be more rapid. The theme of this conference is to examine how we might achieve this in relation to SDG 10 (reduce inequality within and among countries) and SDG 16 (promote just, peaceful, and inclusive societies). Combined, these two goals address fundamental issues around the pursuit of equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights, all of which are integral to the values of UPEACE and Arden University.

Conference submissions and contributions

In keeping with the aims of the conference, we welcome a diverse range of submissions which can include traditional academic papers but also other contributions such as ideas for workshop discussions or showcasing advances in EDI across a range of contexts. Submissions and contributions can be based around, but are not restricted to, the following themes:

  • The theoretical and conceptual basis of SDGs 10 and 16
  • Empirical studies related to the targets within SDGs 10 and 16
  • Case studies of EDI initiatives in higher education
  • Exploration of structural and systemic discrimination and innovative methods for addressing this
  • The ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its role in driving digital inclusion, equality, and global security
  • Analysis of the role of institutions and organisations in promoting peace and justice

The conference will involve a series of streams based on key themes, and we hope to run discussion panels and plenary sessions.

Please note that this conference is only open to colleagues from Arden University and UPEACE. Submissions from individuals not affiliated to these two institutions will not be accepted. Submissions will be included in the conference proceedings but there are no plans for wider publications at this stage.
