Celebrating Black History Month at Arden University.

Every October, Black History Month UK offers a valuable opportunity to reflect, learn, and celebrate. It is a time to recognise the achievements and contributions of the Black British community and to acknowledge the resilience and pride that continue to shape our society today.

This year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” focuses on the confidence and leadership of Black people across the UK. At Arden University, this message is particularly meaningful. We are proud to be a place where Black students and staff are supported and feel empowered to inspire others.

A Brief History of Black History Month in the UK

Black History Month was officially launched in the UK in 1987, thanks in large part to the work of Ghanaian activist Akyaaba Addai-Sebo. His vision was to give Black British communities a dedicated time to honour their heritage, achievements, and cultural contributions.

From the beginning, universities have played a key role in this celebration. They have provided spaces to challenge injustice and amplify voices that have too often been overlooked. That legacy continues today, and Arden is proud to be part of it.

Supporting Black students and staff at Arden University

At Arden, we believe that everyone deserves access to an education where they feel respected. That‘s why we take active steps to support our Black students and staff as part of our overall mission and vision for Higher Education in the UK and worldwide.

Inclusive learning environment

Our courses are designed to be flexible inclusive. We recognise the diverse experiences our students bring with them and aim to ensure our teaching reflects a wide range of perspectives. We also provide academic and wellbeing support tailored to individual needs.

Staff and student networks

We are proud of our Race Equality Network, which brings together staff and students to share experiences and help drive positive change across the university. The network plays a key role in shaping policies and promoting understanding throughout the Arden community.

Championing Black excellence

We actively highlight and celebrate the achievements of Black students and staff through internal recognition initiatives. Whether it is a student succeeding against the odds or a staff member leading on a new initiative, we believe in shining a light on Black excellence and sharing those successes widely.

Daukenumwerimi Victory Charles

Daukenumwerimi Victory Charles – Arden University student and aspiring pilot

Originally from Nigeria, Daukenumwerimi Victory Charles moved to the UK to pursue higher education and is now in his third year of studying Computing at Arden University.

Choosing blended learning at Arden University in the UK has allowed Charles to connect with classmates and lecturers while still benefiting from the flexibility to balance study with other interests. His lecturers, many of whom have real industry experience, have helped him understand the practical side of computing in ways that feel real and applicable.

Beyond his academic work, Charles is also pursuing another dream by earning his private pilot’s licence. His story is one of courage, ambition, and determination. Overcoming self-doubt and adjusting to life in a new country, Charles is now thriving in an environment that allows him to combine education with personal growth.

Moving forward together

Black History Month is a time to honour the past, but it is also a time to look ahead. At Arden University, we are committed to building an environment where Black students and staff feel proud of who they are.

This means continuing to listen and learn. It means making sure our curriculum reflects diverse voices. It means supporting individuals in their academic and professional journeys and celebrating the many ways they contribute to our community.
